It's called 'MAKE' and follows the lives of 4 self-taught American artists ; Prophet Royal Robertson, Judith Scott, Ike Morgan and Hawkins Bolden.

Alessi: Hello! I hope you’re comfortable wherever you are. Are you sitting or standing at the moment?

WT2000: Tod’s on his 28th hour of driving, sitting comfortably, Casey’s sitting shotgun, not that comfortably with his new accordian, Vanessa’s very comfortable in the back with her blankets skanky baby and christmas felice, drinking a real man’s redbull and I am comfortable, yes, thank you.

How has your summer been?

WT2000: We’ve spent most of this summer traveling all over the world, having a great time playing music. The few weeks we were home, Casey’s was surfing, Tod was touring with Maria Taylor and Azure Ray, Vanesa was befriending international babes and I was swimming.

Your album is one of my favourites. Do you have a favourite song on there?

WT2000: Thank you, Alessi! We love your music and also your personality. Our current favorite is ‘Done With Love’.

The lyrics are especially special and cover all sorts of ground. Is there a time in particular that words come to you? Do they come on the move, in your car, while you’re cooking?

WT2000: Vanesa says “the lyrics come to me through morgan”. The lyrics often come while I’m driving. Mostly in the moments I have to myself without distraction. And like most things, often when I least expect them. These moments are revealing.

Do you think your album has a smell? My nose picks up on trees, vanilla, sea water and sunscreen. Am I close?

WT2000: Yes, you’ve hit it on the nose. Those nice scents in addtion to patchouli, chili, starburstand coconut water. Casey only likes your choices and disagrees with the rest of us..

How did you meet up and start playing together?

WT2000: We met at Uni. You know, at Oxford. Nahh, we met through friends and turned to family.

What is your favourite dessert?

WT2000: Vaness loves creme brule. The Caseman loves pumpkin pie. I love berries the most and Tod more enjoys a savory variety.

How does one visit Whispertown? By plane, train or automobile?

WT2000: By submarine rocketship hovercraft… or rollerblades.

Is the population 2000?

WT2000: Yes. 2000 strong and growing.

What are you doing for the rest of the day?

WT2000: With any luck we’ll make it back to LA! Our last show with The Breeders was in Ohio.. we’ve been driving for days straight! Vanessa says she’ll be staying up late since she just drank a real man’s Red Bull.

Dada is very nice shop filled to the brim with cds/films/vinyl and other bits and bobs, the staff are kind and the windows are covered with a lovely red sticker pattern so when sun pours in, red shapes are reflected around the shop

if you find yourself in Chiswick, make a pitstop!

the nearest tube stop is Chiswick Park (district line)

and down the road, headed towards Hammersmith is another golden find....Outsider Tart!

It's a wonderful bakery/cafe/artspace run by two american friends that love baking - - - go go go!

they have a few stands in other spots (see below) but Chiswick is home to their own very Tart

HungaMunga are hosting a day of acoustic music and natural arts and crafts in the East Reservoir Community Garden,

Live music will be played in the Bird Hide to help raise some money for this lovely wildlife centre. There'll also be drawing, painting, clay-modelling and collage-making, birdbox-making, pond-life drawing and the construction of a wildlife habitat wall.

There'll also be food and non-alcoholic drinks available but if you prefer your own treats, they're welcome too!

I'll be playing at around 5pm and other folks playing are ; Tristram, Brody and Quint, Off Ground Touch, Rebecca Jade, Kari Kleiv and Joe Buzfuz...

'Roman Title IV Plain Jane' is centered around the idea of constructions, Mark A. Rodriguez employing a variety of medias, from an architectural model sculpture of the stage scaffolding seen at large music festivals, to collage and pencil pieces depicting children trashing an office building. In 'Study for the Bronzing of a Stadium-Sized Grateful Dead Audience from 1995', Rodriguez uses a photo of the massive crowd at an outdoor Grateful Dead concert and silhouettes the mob in gold sharpie, transforming them into an amorphous golden glob.

Rodriguez has been included in the group shows, Vultures (Manic, Oakland 2009), California Biennial (2008), Psych R & R (Berkeley Art Museum, 2007), and Yellow (Fellows of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 2008). He is recipient of the Erin Kluk Memorial Award, Yozo Hamaguchi Printmaking Award, and the Barclay Simpson Award.

SXSW Q4MUSIC BLOG

On my first ever day at SXSW I set up camp at the Radio Room on 6th Street. Sandwiched between the sets of Port 'O Brien and Loney Dear, I was pointed in the direction of Heartless Bastards - [click here for a photo] a favourite discovery! They filled up the Paste tent with their beautiful soulful rock. Led by Erika; a lady who beholds with a voice as powerful and pretty as Karen Dalton's. Hailing from Dayton, Ohio - this was their first show at SXSW ... they were a real treat for the ears. Listen to The Mountain and others gems on their Myspace page now.

I first came across Andrew's artwork on a postcard in a parcel from a friend. It really stood out to me and here's some of his work below, i hope it plucks at your mind strings too....

The drawings, murals, and installations by San Francisco artist Andrew Schoultz (1975) are populated by symbolic figures that recall past eras and cultures. Armored horses with banners burst through the image, and Mongolian warriors conjure up notions of the overly powerful, strangely misplaced in time, in a world full of smokestacks scattered among simple log cabins, pylons, and fragmenting nature.

Schoultz develops his works out of the problems of modern, consumer-oriented life. In using his murals to work with either public space or the art space, he tries to trigger processes of association and thought that in no way require a corporate identity, but instead offer the viewer a wide-open field. Schoultz attempts to awaken in the viewer a consciousness based upon an individual sensibility for a responsible treatment of natural life, in order to (re)activate knowledge about nature in our present, culturally characterized time. - The Koln Show

Last thursday, Lynden gathered us up and took us to the Shunt vaults in London Bridge tube station. It was unlike anything i'd ever seen and in amongst the crowds of folk shuffling in the dark was the Paper Cinema. Handmade paper films. Live. Music performed on the spot.

I unwrapped a present from Madeleine two days ago and it's been within arm's reach since. It's a book called Capacity, hand written Theo Ellisworth. The book takes you on a journey round the nooks and crannies of Theo's brain.

He's based his nest in Portland, Oregon and his work is supremely brainy and detailed! That's his desk up there!

Julie is a very special lady...here she talks about her work and her link is at the very bottom if you'd like to get in touch with her or see more of her creations...

" My work is based on ink drawings. I like the fluidity of the medium, the surprises that comes of the shapes laid on the paper. I like the idea of things happening a little by chance.

From my drawings emerged creatures;"Woodies", half animals by the shape, half men by the behaviour. I worked on a series and developed onto the idea of making a book of "adventures" where those woodies will live in. I so am constantly working on the world that would surround, feed and occupy the Woodies. A world of vegetal and other animals. A children's book for Adults. Strictly made of images and no words, because the importance of spaces of the shapes and characters in the page is really important to me, "how it breathes". Also I would like not to give guidance to the viewer on how to look at the book with words, but the drawings should be enough to suggest a narrative.

Music is a great source of inspiration, because of its intangible aspect which leaves us with all the freedom to create images out of sounds. I also get inspired by children's book because of their creativity, freedom on shape, material, texture and format. I am fascinated by patterned fabric, they are a great source of inspiration for the flowery, vegetal side of my images. They have the reassuring quality of childhood.I also used them as part of collages. The fabrics are also inspirational through "folklore", often colourful patterns have been created for especially made clothes to represent a nation, a group of people, This is very exciting to the eye and imagination.

I also have used the thread a lot in my work as a symbol of time, relation between one space to another, closeness, tightness as well as breakage and knots and the use of fabric and linear drawings are a combination of those aspects. I am actually working on a series of books based on fairy tales, because those got the two aspects I am interested in; an ambiguity of two worlds; the Children 's one and the adult one ... A story written for children but with hiding darker meanings, helping the process of growing up. If we ever have to ... "

Born in France in 1981, Julie Vermeille moved to England in 1999. She studied a BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at the London College of Printing and graduated in 2004 from a BA (hons) in Illustration in Camberwell College of Arts ( both in London). She has been part of the Craft Central Designer network since 2007 and as well as producing her own hand bound books she has worked for Creaturemag magazine and had her creations published in a Fil Rouge Press book.

thank you very much folks for coming out to the instores...you could've stayed at home or work keeping warm but you braved the outdoors and layered up to hear songs and i felt really lucky!

i love instores and have been going to them for a long while - the other week Department of Eagles (www.departmentofeagles.com) filled Rough Trade on talbot road to the brimly brim and it was such a treat to hear their songs in such a nice little room.
here is a video of them performing for Pitchfork, the song is called 'No one does it like you'

i'd never done an instore of my own, let alone two in a row - and it was lovely putting faces to your ears and saying hello....

i hope the E.P is filling your ears happily,
